Keynote Speaker

Renée Westphall

Renee currently serves as a counselor and advisor at Maranatha Baptist University in Watertown, Wisconsin. Previous ministries include nineteen years as the Dean of Women and counseling faculty at Maranatha, eight years as teacher and Elementary Principal at Bethany Christian School in Troy, Michigan, and fifteen years as a teacher and elementary administrator at Dade Christian School in Miami, Florida. Renee holds undergrad and master’s degrees in education and counseling.

Colleagues describe Renee as multi-talented—a gifted communicator, master teacher, excellent administrator, and wise counselor. Students add that she is inspirational, has a great sense of humor (instigator of shenanigans!), is compassionate, and her love for God and others is contagious.

Renee is a frequent speaker at seminars, retreats, ladies’ meetings, and educational venues nationwide.

Renee loves to travel, read, cook, entertain, attend concerts, stage productions, sporting events, and spend time with family and friends.

Her prayer for the 2021 ladies’ retreat is that God would refresh, renew, and reset all of us.

Dana Davis | Obsessive Comparison Disorder

Contentment in a Culture of Comparison

Do you find yourself measuring your value against your friend’s professional success, family, appearance, popularity, or most recent Instagram story? Do your high school BFF's Facebook posts make you feel like you are lagging behind or missing out? You are not alone. In a recent study, a staggering 88% of women said they compare themselves to images on social media, with half saying that the comparison is unfavorable.  Excessively comparing ourselves with others is exhausting! It drains our energy and steals our joy.  Learn practical Biblical strategies that will help you exchange Obsessive Comparison Disorder for true contentment.

Carole Vawter | Refreshment in Your Local Church

Do you find that your local church is a place for spiritual refreshment? When you need a spiritual "spa treatment," do you turn to your church for comfort, help, strength? Do others in your church who need spiritual encouragement turn to you as a resource? Jesus himself established the church to be a place for believers to find community, a place to give and receive support. How can we be more effective as we interact with others in our church? With many years of ministry experience, Carole will share a biblical foundation for every believer to be refreshed and to refresh others within the local church. She will share ideas for helping others grow and change, supporting pastors in their ministry, and creating an atmosphere of security and fulfillment through your church.

Vera Smetak | Beautiful at Every Age

It has been my desire to "grow old graciously and sweetly."  It was brought to my attention that it doesn't take place automatically, but is something we begin working on at an early age.  After salvation we begin a journey much like Christian in Pilgrim's Progress.  There are ups and downs but it should be more like riding an escalator always rising higher till we meet our Savior.  We will be talking about things that helped me along the way.  It's not about doing what we enjoy, but learning to enjoy what we do!  Come expecting to have fun - laugh, sing, and be challenged by God's Word.  True happiness comes as we let the corners of our mouth turn upward.  What's the first thing you notice about someone when you see them?  Their countenance speaks louder than words.  "Don't run with the turkeys, when you can soar like an eagle." (Isa. 40:31). "Happiness is like jam, you can't spread even a little, without getting some on yourself!"

Amy Herbster | Freedom from Damaging Emotions: Turning Weapons into Tools

Emotions are like wild horses, undeniably strong and beautiful—but also potentially dangerous if not broken and harnessed. Like me, you may have experienced the strength of emotions such as fear, anger, longing, or pain and felt like you were being wildly, helplessly dragged away from rational thoughts and sensible choices. If so, you know how vulnerable you are to being controlled instead of being in control, and you understand the kind of damage that unrestrained emotions can do in a short amount of time. So how can we harness the power, energy, and beauty of our God-given emotions rather than being overcome by them? How can we use our emotions as tools to love instead of weapons to manipulate? We can do it by actively responding to life based on God’s truth, not passively reacting to life based on our own feelings. We can do it by fixing our minds on the True Reality rather than believing our own skewed interpretation of reality. Join me to explore practical ways to do these things and find freedom from damaging emotions.

Ruthie Woodbeck | Ladies’ Choir

Psalm 100:1 & 2 says, '”Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.   Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.”  As followers of Christ, we have the wonderful opportunity to encourage one another not only in God's Word but through music.  Please consider joining the choir workshop to do simply this...worship the Lord and encourage one another...through music.  I have chosen a simple song sung in three part harmony.  If you can read basic music and/or sing by ear, you are welcome to join me, as together we lift our voices in song.
